Obituary for Roy Lytton Alford

Roy Lytton   Alford
Roy Lytton Alford, 82, of Martinsville, IL passed away at 11:52 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1, 2014, with his family by his side in Burnsides Nursing Home in Marshall, IL. He was born on March 10, 1932 in Manchester, TN, the son of James Wesley Alford and Mae Nola Fraizer Alford. On May 10, 1953, he married Iris Marie Smithson in Tennessee.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Marie Alford of Martinsville, IL; sons, Dale Alford of Martinsville, IL and Jim Dodd and wife Kay, also of Martinsville, IL; daughters, Betty Burkett and husband Bob of Marshall, IL, Sue Borders and husband Don of Janesville, WI and Dorothy Grisham and husband Gary of Crane, MO; brother, Hulin Alford of Paris, IL and Joe Alford and companion Dennis of Smyrna Beach, FL; sister, Lucille Rodgers of Manchester, TN; fourteen grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren and sixteen great great grandchildren. He was preceded by his parents; brothers, Russell, Layton and Steve Alford, and sisters, Betty Bullard and Hulene Sutton.
Roy worked at the Rowe Foundry in Martinsville for 35 years until retiring. Roy was a member of the Martinsville Baptist Church and an avid fisherman. He was known to be a competitive man as a horseshoe pitcher and a Poker player. There are many fond memories of playing cards in the kitchen while listening to the “Grand Ole Opry” on the radio. He liked to play checkers but found it hard to get anyone to play him because he won all the time. Gardening was a favorite past time too as well digging up small saplings in the woods to drag up into the yard to grow up and prune into full canopies of shade.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00pm on Saturday, July 5th, 2014, at the Greenwell Funeral Home with Bro. Art Orndorff officiating. Burial will follow in the Ridgelawn Cemetery, Martinsville, IL. Visitation will be held the same day from 1:00pm up to the service time at the Greenwell Funeral Home, 30 N. Washington St., Martinsville, IL.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2509 S. Neil St., Champaign, IL 61820.
