Obituary for Richard G. Applegate

Richard G. “Dick” Applegate, 81, of Champaign, IL formerly of Westfield, IL died at 5:20 p.m. on Saturday, September 5, 2009 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, IL. He was born February 11, 1928 in Westfield, IL, the son of Robert Alva Applegate and Mary Blanch Reed Applegate. On October 6, 1951, he married Wanda F. Stephens in Richmond, VA. She passed away on April 6, 1991.


Survivors include his son, Stephen Applegate of Champaign, IL; sister, Madge Waltrip of Charleston, IL; sister, Mary Strader of Lafayette, IN; sister in law, Edie Applegate of Casey, IL; brother in law, Wayne Stephens of Westfield, IL; grandson, Nicholas Applegate of Potomac, IL; adopted granddaughter, Donya Sue Newell of Tolono, IL; great granddaughter, Angel Nichole Applegate; niece, Sherry Hoferkamp of St. Louis, MO; nephews, Barry Hoferkamp of Palm Desert, CA, Mark Strader of Lafayette, IN, Scott Applegate of Casey, IL, Rod Applegate of Sparks, NV; Tim Applegate of Pawnee, IL; Joanne Pierson Family; eight great nieces and nephews; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Wanda Applegate; brother, Don Applegate; brother in law, Max Strader, and dear friend, Joanne Pierson.


After attending Westfield schools, Dick joined the US Army, serving in the European Theater during the Korean War. Dick displayed his excellent work ethic and attention to detail while working for Alan Parker Trucking. He later worked for Marathon Oil Company, from which he retired after thirty-three years in utility maintenance. He was a lifetime member of the Casey VFW Post 5762 and a member of the Elks Club in Champaign, IL.


Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 10, 2009 at the Markwell Chapel in Westfield, IL with Rev. Eddie Hammond officiating. Burial will follow in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Westfield, IL with Military Graveside Rites by the Casey VFW Post 5762. Visitation will be held from 12 (noon) to 2 p.m. at the Markwell Chapel in Westfield, IL.
