Obituary for Cleone Lytle (Mark) Markwell

Cleone Lytle (Mark)  Markwell
Cleone Lytle “Mark” Markwell, age 93, of Casey, IL passed away at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2017, in Casey, IL. He was born February 28, 1924, in Martinsville, IL, the son of Cleone H. Markwell and Rogene Mitchell Markwell. On April 16, 1949, he married Eleanor Icenogle in Toledo, IL.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Eleanor Markwell of Casey, IL; children, Patricia (Jack) Sturgeon of Arlington Heights, IL; Susan (Peter Davis) Meinkoth of Savoy, IL; Barbara (Ed) Markwell Lynch of Ledyard, CT; Philip (Lisa) Markwell of Maineville, OH and Kathy (Chris) Abend of Garden City, ID; foster children, Carol Comer of Casey, IL and Perry Edwards of Dayton, OH; brother, Lee Markwell of Casey, IL; sister, Lois Edwards of Scottsdale, AZ; fourteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and foster son, Joe Edwards.

Mark was a 1942 graduate of Casey High School and was the first Eagle Scout in Casey. He served his country during WWII in the US Army Air Corp. In 1946 he graduated from Worsham School of Mortuary Science. He owned and operated Markwell Funeral Home with his brother Lee from 1947 – 1986 and helped establish both of the local nursing homes in Casey, IL. Mr. Markwell served on the original board to develop Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center and he was an original board member and investor in Preferred Bank in Casey, IL. Mark enjoyed flying (over 5000 hours in his lifetime) and owned or built twenty three planes. He helped establish and continued to support the Casey Municipal Airport. He earned his Ham Radio license (W9YVG) at the age of twelve and enjoyed being an operator for the rest of his life. He was a lifetime member of the Casey First Christian Church.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 am on Thursday, June 22, 2017, at Markwell Funeral Home, 200 N. Central Ave., Casey, IL with Rev. Brian McCreanor and Rev. Kathy Abend officiating. Burial will follow in the Washington Street Cemetery, Casey, IL. Visitation will be held from 4 – 7 pm on Wednesday evening at the Casey First Christian Church, 200 SE Eighth St., Casey, IL.
