David Lee Snyder, 71, of Charleston, IL died at 2:10 p.m. Saturday Dec. 31, 2016 in Carle Hospital in Champaign, IL. He was born October 13, 1945 in Paris, IL, the son of Charles Franklin and Hazel G. Ward Snyder. He married Peggy Lee Baird of Martinsville, IL on October 6, 1967.

He was a standardbred horse trainer with his main focus on pacers. Dave raced at many county fairs, Balmoral Park, Sportsman’s Park, Maywood Park, Cahokia Downs, Fairmont Park, Hawthorne Race Course, and Hoosier Park. He spent many Labor Day weekends and family vacations at the state fairs in Springfield and DuQuoin. Dave also worked as a custodian in the Martinsville school system for several years. He was a graduate of Paris High School class of 1963. He was an avid sports fan and loved the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, Fighting Illini, Fairfield Mules and Martinsville Bluestreaks. He was thrilled with this past season to finally see the Cubs win a World Series. He played Huff ‘n Puff volleyball on the Pacemakers team and travel slow-pitch softball for many years. He also enjoyed being outdoors, fishing and mushroom hunting. He always looked forward to the annual Snyder fishing trip at ReelFoot Lake. Most of all, Dave loved spending time with family and friends and loved gathering around a table of great food followed by beating his opponents in a game of cards.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy of Charleston, IL; a son, Chet Lee Snyder and his wife Misty of Fairfield, IL; a daughter, Cathy Lee Feely and her husband Matt of Champaign, IL; three sisters, Betty Snyder of Danville, IL, Wilma Jean Sterling of Peachtree City, GA, and Beulah Kemp of West Frankfort, IL; four grandchildren, Macklin, Marylee, and Macayle Snyder and Lela Feely. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Charles Snyder, Jr. and Carl Edward Snyder; and three sisters, Wanita Keenen, Mildred Huston, and Lela Southard.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 5, 2017 at the Greenwell Funeral Home in Martinsville, IL with Pastor Brian Miller officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Greenwell Funeral Home 30 N. Washington St., Martinsville, IL. Burial will be in Baird Cemetery in Martinsville, IL.

Dave loved being a part of his Grandkids’ lives and his memory would be honored well by a contribution to the Feely’s Adoption Fund 4509 Copper Ridge Rd. Champaign, IL 61822. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. In honor of Dave’s love of the Cubs, we encourage you to wear your Cubs t-shirt or jersey to the visitation.
