Obituary for Donald G. "Don" Doty

Donald G. "Don"   Doty
Donald G. Doty, age 83, of rural Charleston, IL passed away at 4:50 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, Coles County, IL. He was born August 13, 1932 in Hutton Twp., Coles County, IL, the son of Donald Clayton Doty and Ferne (Goble) Doty. Don married Karen (Joplin) Doty on June 4, 1960 and they enjoyed 55 years of marriage.

He is survived by his wife, Karen, his son, Jeff and wife Elizabeth and grandson Clay. He is also survived by many other family members and friends.

Don attended Davis School and graduated from Eastern State High School in 1950. He attended Eastern Illinois University for two years. In 1952 he joined the United States Air Force. He served four years during the Korean Conflict. He was a loadmaster on cargo planes flying primarily to Alaska and in the Pacific area. He was honorably discharged in 1956 and he continued to visit with lifelong Air Force friends. He returned home to farm with his dad and later his son, Jeff.

Don and his dad owned and operated the Charleston Sale Barn in the late 60’s and early 70’s, where he was also a part time auctioneer. Don was a member of the Coles County Farm Bureau and served on the board of directors for many years. He was a member and officer of the Elks Club. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and Corn Belt Shrine and a lifetime member of the American Legion. After Don retired from farming in 1990, he was a courier for Lincolnland Visiting Nurses for a few years.

Don had a love of golfing. After he and Karen retired they enjoyed going on golf trips and traveling around the United States. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and will be missed for his sense of humor and his funny stories.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 11, 2016 at the Markwell Funeral Home with Rev. Walter Miller and Rev. Scott Sims officiating. Burial will follow in the Liberty Cemetery, rural Charleston, IL with graveside military rites by the Westfield American Legion and the Kansas American Legion. Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday evening at the Markwell Funeral Home, 200 N. Central Ave., Casey, IL with a 6 p.m. Masonic Service by the Charleston Masonic Lodge.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Illinois Chapter, 207 S. Prospect Road, Suite 1, Bloomington, IL 61704.
