Richard Eugene Newell, 81, of Westfield, IL passed away at 10:20 a.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at his home. He was born on June 8, 1931 in Charleston, IL, the son of Ray Newell and Florence Marie Cooper Newell. On September 2, 1949, he married Barbara Ann Galbreath in Corinth, MS.
Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Barbara Newell of Westfield, IL; daughter, Vickie Gilbert and husband Steve of Westfield, IL; son, Mike Newell of Charleston, IL; grandsons, Nate Gilbert and wife LeeAnn of Casey, IL, Nick Gilbert and wife Caryn, of Casey, IL, and Jason Gilbert and wife Tara of Gridley, IL; great grandchildren, Drew and Trey Gilbert, Grey, Gyllyane and Sage Gilbert, and Rylie Hines; and brothers, Robert Newell and wife Jackie of Charleston, IL and Larry Newell and wife Sally of Tolono, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Rusty Newell, grandson, Kyle Newell, and two brothers, Dale Newell and Don Newell.
Mr. Newell was a member of the Westfield United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge of Westfield and the Elks Club of Charleston. Richard was a lifelong farmer and a building service foreman at Eastern Illinois University until he retired in 1990.
Per the family’s request, a private family service will be held at a later date.
